The State of Illustration Survey - Now Open

Posted by: |

Darren Di Lieto has been gathering information about the illustration industry for the past six years and providing that information to the world.

Last year, the report used data collected from 1506 respondents, which included freelance illustrators, in-house illustrators, artists and other creative types. The State of Illustration survey was open from 31st October to 11th December 2021. Respondents were a mix of genders and ages, some of the information found the audience were primarily social media users that are also fiercely independent self-employed business owners. Due to the solitary nature of being an artist or freelance illustrator, most of them spent a good portion of their working day working solo, with their social interactions primarily being limited to social media or communication devices rather than in-person. The survey found the average income was £17,844.00 in Great Britain, €18,434.00 in Europe and $56,804.00 in America. The 39-page report covers many other areas including mental health, artist representation, pricing, social media usage, discrimination, experience and education. The current 2021 Survey is available.

For the first time, The State of Illustration Survey report was offered solely as a PDF download. The 39-page report took a staggering 300 hours to create! It's that time of year again, to help in this worthwhile effort please go to the 2022 State of Illustration Survey questionnaire.
